“Bestowing a religion” That’s what Hong Kah means in Hokkien. A fitting name for a place with such a rich history. We stand today in the heart of Hong Kah a modern residential precinct in Jurong West. But this land whispers tales of a different era.
Imagine a time long before these HDB flats. Before the bustling roads and convenient MRT connections. Hong Kah was once a village. A small rural settlement nestled amongst the greenery. This peaceful village was known as Hong Kah Village. It lay north of where we stand today. It was named after the Christians who settled there. “Hong Kah” in Hokkien also means Christian. This area had a strong association with the Anglican St Andrew’s Mission. The mission worked tirelessly in the area since the 1870s.
They built St John’s Church Jurong. This church stood proudly on a hilltop. Reaching it required climbing 105 steps. The church served the community until 1992. Then redevelopment changed everything. The old village disappeared. Only memories remain. That’s the story of the original Hong Kah.
Today’s Hong Kah is different. It’s a thriving community. Look around you. See the well-maintained HDB flats. These are homes to many. Jurong-Clementi Town Council manages these buildings. Residents are represented in parliament by either Shawn Huang Wei Zhong or Xie Yao Quan. Their representatives depend on the part of Hong Kah they live in.
The precinct is well-connected. Jurong West Avenue 2 is a major road. Other roads connect Hong Kah to the rest of Singapore. The Pan Island Expressway is close by making it easy to get around. Many bus services connect Hong Kah to Jurong East MRT station and other parts of the island. You can even find several trunk services and express services to the city center. Convenient. isn’t it?
This modern Hong Kah still reflects its history. It has several Chinese temples: Che Wein Khor Temple Jurong West United Temple Jurong Combined Temple and Tong Whye Temple. The temples keep alive a tradition of faith and community. Several schools and community centers serve the area. The Jurong West Neighbourhood Police Centre even stands here. Providing security and safety.
Hong Kah Point is the local town center. It has everything you need. From a hawker center built in 1985 to shops and services. It is the heart of this busy precinct.
So as we stand here in the heart of Hong Kah remember its past. Remember the Christian community. Remember the old village. Today’s vibrant precinct stands on that foundation. A living testament to change and progress. Hong Kah. A community built on faith progress and memories.
