Seventy years of nurturing students. That is Boon Lay Secondary School. Established in 1977, Boon Lay Secondary School first opened its doors at the junction of Boon Lay Way and Jalan Boon Lay. This humble beginning saw 13 classes. Seven of these were English-medium. The remaining six were Chinese-medium.
Officially opened in 1979, Boon Lay Secondary School has grown. Ngeow Pack Hua the then-Member of parliament for Boon Lay inaugurated the opening. 1998 marked a pivotal year. Boon Lay became a solely English-medium school. This shift catered to the evolving educational landscape.
In 2000, Boon Lay Secondary School transitioned to single-session operations. This change optimized the use of resources. It provided students with a more focused learning environment. The school moved to 11 Jurong West Street 65 in November 1999.
Boon Lay Secondary School embraced inclusivity in 1996. It began enrolling deaf students. These students communicated using sign language. In 2017, the government centralized deaf student education. Beatty Secondary School became the focal point.
Since 2017 Boon Lay Secondary School has classes divided by students’ co-curricular activities. This approach replaced traditional streaming. It fosters stronger bonds among students. It also promotes collaboration within CCAs.
A significant milestone occurred in 2017. Boon Lay Secondary School merged with Pioneer Secondary School. Boon Lay retained its name. The merger strengthened the school’s foundation.
The school crest has two figures moving as one. They move toward common goals. This symbolizes teachers and students. They are working together. The crest is like a ladder. It calls students to greater heights. The school’s Chinese name is significant. It indicates Boon Lay’s early years. It was a Chinese-medium school.
Boon Lay Secondary School’s motto is “To Love and To Forgive”. This reflects its commitment to compassion. The school song encourages students to strive for greatness. It also fosters a sense of community.
Mr. Inderjit Singh is the current principal. He assumed the role in 2019. Boon Lay Secondary School continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students. The school’s mission is to nurture learners. They should be responsible, resilient, and compassionate. They should also be ready to excel. This is in a dynamic world.
