Did the walls of the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University whisper secrets of bygone eras? We stand before the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University. Its history is deeply intertwined with Shanghai’s vibrant past. This institution, a beacon of medical innovation, stands as a testament to a remarkable journey of resilience and transformation. The Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University traces its roots back to 1934. It began as the B’nai B’rith Polyclinic, founded by the Shanghai Jewish community with generous funding from businessman Elly Kadoorie. As World War II engulfed the globe, the clinic underwent a significant change. In 1942, the Russian Jewish community took over, relocating it to its current location on Fenyang Road and renaming it the Shanghai Jewish Hospital. It offered state-of-the-art medical care, even boasting an X-ray machine. Remarkably, treatment was provided free of charge to those in need, a testament to the hospital’s humanitarian spirit. The hospital’s 60 beds offered refuge and healing during turbulent times. The Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University played a crucial role in providing healthcare to the city’s diverse population. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the hospital embarked on a new chapter. In 1952, it was transformed into the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital of the Shanghai Medical College. Professors Hu Maolian and Guo Bingkuan led the way in this transformation. Finally, in 2000, the hospital adopted its current name when the Shanghai Medical College merged with Fudan University. The Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University now boasts several campuses. The main Fenyang Road campus houses 374 beds and offers a wide range of specialized departments. A second site operates on Baoqing Road, along with campuses in Pudong and Minhang, further expanding its reach and capacity for patient care. The Minhang campus alone adds another 350 beds to the hospital’s total. Today, the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University remains a leading medical institution in China. With over 1,100 employees, it serves a vast number of patients, treating 1.8 million outpatients and performing 90,000 surgeries annually. Patients from all corners of China seek its expertise, solidifying its reputation as a center of excellence. The Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, adaptation, and unwavering dedication to healing. From its humble beginnings as a community clinic to its current status as a renowned medical center, it has consistently served the needs of the people.
