Remember Jules Védrines. This avenue bears the name of a true aviation pioneer. Jules Charles Toussaint Védrines was born in 1881. He rose from humble beginnings to become a celebrated aviator.

Jules Védrines was raised in a tough Paris suburb. This shaped his character. He became known for his rough manner but was still loved by the French public. Védrines first worked at the Gnome engine manufacturing company. Later, he became Robert Loraine’s mechanic in England.

In 1910, Jules Védrines earned his pilot’s license. It was license number 312. He quickly became a prominent pilot. In 1911, he won the Paris to Madrid air race. He flew a Morane-Borel monoplane. Earlier that year, he dropped violets on a Paris procession. People noticed him then too.

Jules Védrines achieved many firsts. In 1912, he flew over 100 mph. He won the Gordon Bennett Trophy race. This cemented his place in aviation history.

Védrines was not just a pilot. He was politically active. In 1912, he ran for office as a Socialist. He even used his plane for propaganda. He dropped leaflets over Paris demanding more aircraft.

In 1913, Védrines flew from Paris to Cairo. This flight was full of controversy. Officials initially stopped him in Nancy. They thought he would violate German airspace. Védrines circumvented this ban. He flew west then changed course for Prague. The Germans tried him in absentia. They sentenced him to a year in prison.

After Prague, Jules Védrines continued to Cairo. He flew via Sofia and Constantinople. He even dropped a Turkish flag on the Sultan’s palace. Védrines reached Cairo on December 29. Representatives greeted him with honors.

During World War One, Jules Védrines flew clandestine missions. He landed behind enemy lines. He delivered and picked up agents. His plane was named “La Vache” meaning The Cow. It was a tribute to his family’s roots.

In 1919, Védrines landed a plane on the Galeries Lafayette roof. This won him a prize. A stone now commemorates this feat.

Sadly, Jules Védrines died in 1919. He was flying to Rome when his plane crashed. He and his mechanic Marcel Guillain were killed.

Jules Védrines left behind a remarkable legacy. He was a pioneer. He was a racer. He was a daring pilot. This avenue remembers his contributions to aviation. Take a moment to reflect on his life. He pushed the boundaries of what was possible.
