In 1354, amidst the marshy confluence of the Blumenthaler Aue and Beckedorfer Beeke, rose Burg Blomendal. This wasn’t the first fortress to grace this spot. An earlier structure, built by the knights von Oumünde, met its demise in 1305 during the Bremen Council Feud. But from those ruins, a new stronghold emerged. Burg Blomendal, also known as Hus Blomendal or Haus Blomendal, stands as the oldest secular building in Bremen. Its very name, “Blomendal,” is the Low German version of Blumenthal, the district it calls home. The castle, a sturdy brick construction, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Initially owned by the knights von Oumünde, Diderich von Reken, and Johann von der Hude, Burg Blomendal changed hands in 1436. The Bremen Council acquired the castle and its surrounding lands for 1400 Rhineland guilders. The council then implemented a system of leasing the property to distinguished council members and mayors for ten-year terms. One notable resident was Bremen mayor Diedrich Hoyer the Elder, who took up residence in 1542. His son, Erich Hoyer, also a mayor, commissioned the exquisite ceiling paintings that still adorn the castle’s interior. These paintings, hidden for years beneath a later ceiling addition, were rediscovered in remarkably good condition in the late 20th century. Over time, Burg Blomendal transitioned from a military fortress to a center of administration and justice. It became known as the “Amt Blomendal,” housing the local court and administrative offices. During the Thirty Years’ War, Swedish troops led by Count Königsmarck seized the castle, then referred to as “Haus Blomendal.” Later, in 1742, it was ceded to the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg. With the annexation of Hanover by Prussia, Burg Blomendal came under Prussian rule, eventually housing the district office. Finally, in 1939, with Blumenthal’s incorporation into Bremen, the castle returned to the city’s ownership. Today, Burg Blomendal enjoys a vibrant new life. Following extensive restoration in the 1970s, it serves a variety of purposes. It houses the archives of the Blumenthal Heritage Society and a kindergarten. Its halls resonate with music during concerts and performances. The castle also hosts lectures, private celebrations, conferences, and exhibitions, continuing its legacy as a vital part of the community. Its proximity to the Bremen-Blumenthal train station makes it easily accessible to those who wish to experience its charm.
