Georges-Gabriel Fabre was born in Orléans in 1844. He died in Nîmes in 1911. He studied at prestigious schools. These included École polytechnique and the French National School of Forestry.

Fabre’s impact on French forestry is significant. After graduating in 1868 he became a Guard General of Water and Forests. He served in Dijon and Mende. Later he became a sub-inspector and then an inspector in Alès.

His most notable achievement was developing the Forêt Domaniale de l’Aigoual. He also established a meteorological observatory on Mont Aigoual’s summit. As Gard’s reforestation director until 1900 Fabre oversaw this project.

The Forêt Domaniale de l’Aigoual covers approximately 15000 hectares today. 11000 hectares are in Gard. The rest are in Lozère. This forest stands as a testament to Fabre’s dedication.

In 1900 Fabre became curator of Forestry in Nîmes. He remained in this role until his retirement in 1909. His work left an indelible mark on the region’s landscape.
