The Sri Maha Mariammam Temple stands proudly in Georgetown’s Little India a vibrant testament to Penang’s rich cultural heritage.

Originally a small shrine the temple grew with the Tamil Indian community. These early settlers came to Penang to work and trade. They built this temple as a place of worship for their patron deity Mother Mariamman. She is the goddess of rain disease and protection. Many see her as a powerful protector. She embodies Mother Earth a force both terrifying and nurturing.

The temple’s name has changed over time. It was once known as the Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple. Later it became the Sri Arulmigu Mahamariamman Temple. Today most people simply call it the Mariamman Temple or the Queen Street Indian Temple. The names all refer to this very same place.

Inside the temple more treasures await. Marvel at the statues of Hindu deities. You’ll see Lord Subramaniam Durga and Ganapathy. The temple’s interior is filled with statues of gods and goddesses. Many are priceless works of art made of panchaloha an alloy of five metals. Some are even embellished with precious stones.
