Nestled in Edgewater stands Saint Ita’s Roman Catholic Church. It is a testament to faith and architectural grandeur. Completed in 1927, this church has been a beacon of hope for the community. Its story is one of devotion artistic vision and community spirit.
Saint Ita’s parish was founded in 1900. About 53 Catholic families formed it. Reverend John Crow celebrated the first mass in a Guild Hall. This marked the humble beginnings of a parish that would grow significantly.
The church’s membership swelled. High-rise buildings went up in the area. In 1923, Archbishop George W. Mundelein gave the go-ahead for a new church. He suggested it should be built in the French Gothic style.
Henry J. Schlacks was chosen to design Saint Ita’s Church. He was a famed architect. The cornerstone was laid in 1924. By 1927, the new church was complete. Its medallion stained glass windows contain over 200000 pieces of glass. They create a mesmerizing display of color and light.
The French Gothic design draws inspiration from churches in France. These include the cocathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation de Bourg-en-Bresse and the cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres. This gives Saint Ita’s a unique and timeless aesthetic. The exterior is clad in Bedford limestone. The 120-foot tower reaches towards the sky.
Inside Saint Ita’s, the sanctuary is adorned with gold leaf. Stenciled vines create an atmosphere of reverence. These decorations were added in 1950-1951 by John Mallin.
The stained glass windows were crafted by the French house of Mauméjean. They bathe the interior in a kaleidoscope of colors. The neo-Gothic high altar and side altars are made of marble and Istrian stone.
In 1949, a pipe organ was added. It has 4500 pipes. The organ enriches the worship experience.
The parish of Saint Ita merged with St. Thomas of Canterbury in May 2019. Together they formed the Parish of Mary Mother of God. Saint Gregory the Great joined the union in September 2020. Saint Ita is the Parish Church and Office. It is located at 1220 W. Catalpa Ave.
