Lighthouse Church

Founded in 1962 Lighthouse Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It all began with Bishop Jerry D Goodloe. He had a vision. A small group gathered in a home on Calumet Avenue. Four people joined that first meeting. Two days later the first service took place on West 69th Street. Pastor Goodloe and his members knelt in prayer. They dedicated their humble beginnings to God. Their community outreach was key. Their membership grew. Young people joined bringing their families. Many of those early members remain today. The church’s choir started with just seven members. It quickly grew in popularity. Their first musical was a huge success. People had to stand outside. Pastor Goodloe played many roles. He was pastor choir director musician and often janitor. He even started the potbelly stove each morning. The church moved several times reflecting its consistent growth. In 1971 they bought a building on East 75th Street. A decade later they recorded a successful gospel album. It reached number three nationally. Their singing ministry spread across the United States. By 1986 Lighthouse had outgrown that space again. They moved to a larger location on South Exchange Avenue. This move was celebrated with a parade and motorcade. Sadly a fire damaged the sanctuary in 2005. The community rallied offering support. The church was renovated. Bishop Goodloe’s legacy is impressive. The city even renamed a street in his honor. He was a Living Legend. He loved children and education. His favorite saying was “the only way to have friends is to show yourself friendly”. He passed away in 2015 after 53 years of service. Pastor Deon White leads the church today. He continues Bishop Goodloe’s vision. Lighthouse Baptist Church continues to thrive. It is a place of worship community and faith.
