It started as a series of wooden shacks. It served as a convalescent center for ANZAC soldiers during World War One. The land was generously offered by the Billyard-Leake family. After the war, the estate was sold to Middlesex County Council. They transformed it into a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. The location, at one of Middlesex’s highest points, provided fresh air, which was considered crucial for treatment.
Harefield Hospital played a significant role during World War Two. It treated casualties north of the River Thames. It also expanded its services. It offered acute and thoracic care alongside St. Mary’s Hospital. Even Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, worked at Harefield. He studied penicillin’s effects on various infections. This included tuberculosis.
Following the war and the advent of effective tuberculosis treatments, Harefield Hospital transitioned into a general hospital. It then developed a specialization in chest diseases. With the dawn of heart surgery in 1947, it embarked on its journey to becoming a cardiac specialist center. A significant milestone was reached on December 4, 1947. Sir Thomas Holmes Sellors, Harefield’s first thoracic surgeon, performed the world’s first direct pulmonary valvotomy.
Professor Magdi Yacoub’s arrival in 1969 marked a new era. He and his team pioneered groundbreaking procedures. They developed heart and lung transplantation techniques. They also pioneered the use of human heart valves. Harefield Hospital performed its first heart transplant in 1973. A decade later, in 1983, Professor Yacoub performed Europe’s first combined heart and lung transplant. This solidified Harefield Hospital’s reputation as a major transplantation center.
Harefield Hospital has a history of innovation. In 1976, the team pioneered the “arterial switch” operation for newborns. In 1985, Professor Yacoub performed a heart-lung transplant on a 3-year-old, then the world’s youngest recipient. The first “domino” procedure, where a cystic fibrosis patient’s heart was transplanted into another patient, was performed in 1987. Harefield continued to push the boundaries of medical science. In 1995, they pioneered the development of artificial left ventricular assist devices. In 2004, they established the UK’s first 24/7 primary angioplasty service. In 2013, Harefield adopted the Organ Care System (“heart in a box”) for transporting donor hearts. More recently, in 2022, they carried out the UK’s first successful double lung transplant on a patient with COVID-19 related lung complications.
