Amidst the vibrant energy of Shanghai, did you know a unique institution thrives? It’s the Shanghai Normal University of the Elderly, a testament to lifelong learning. This isn’t your typical university. Here, students aged 55 to their late 70s pursue knowledge and camaraderie. They share the facilities of the prestigious Shanghai Normal University, nestled near Shanghai’s city center. The Shanghai Normal University of the Elderly offers a diverse range of courses. From film and dance to languages and photo editing, there’s something for everyone. Seniors can even delve into art and poetry appreciation or prepare for international travels with a tourism course. Renowned professors lead seminars on current affairs and history. These discussions keep the elderly connected to society, fostering intellectual stimulation and vibrant debates. One student, a retired professor named Mr. Hu Ming, shared his appreciation for these classes. He explained that they provide a platform for continued engagement with societal issues, even after retirement. The Shanghai Normal University of the Elderly isn’t a recent development. Its roots trace back to the 1980s. Back then, groups of elderly citizens gathered informally to learn skills like singing and dancing. Recognizing the growing demand, Shanghai authorities officially established the university in 2003. Today, Shanghai boasts five universities and over 280 schools dedicated to senior education. These institutions serve over five million seniors. That’s nearly a quarter of Shanghai’s population. As China urbanizes, these spaces become crucial for social interaction. Mr. Zhuang Si Cong, Vice-President of the Shanghai Normal University of the Elderly, highlighted this. He emphasized the university’s role in combating social isolation among seniors living in apartments. Tuition fees are kept remarkably affordable, ranging from 100 to 300 yuan per class each semester. This encourages commitment and fosters a sense of belonging. Imagine a classroom filled with seniors singing a wartime love song, accompanied by a piano teacher. In another room, students practice newly learned English phrases. This lively atmosphere permeates the Shanghai Normal University of the Elderly. The university’s staff consists of 13 seniors, many of whom are retired teachers from Shanghai Normal University. Retired professors, doctoral students, and master’s students also contribute to the rich learning environment. Classrooms are conveniently located on the first and second floors of the main campus. While some courses span a 16-week semester, others, like piano lessons, can last up to nine years. There are no limitations on the number of courses a student can take, and no minimum qualifications are required. The focus is on the joy of learning, without the pressure of formal exams or certificates. However, the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission introduced a lifelong learning certification program in 2023. This program recognizes seniors who complete specific classes and earn 20 to 30 credits with a formal graduation ceremony. The Shanghai Normal University of the Elderly is more than just an educational institution. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place where seniors pursue passions, connect with peers, and embrace lifelong learning.
