Tucked away in the heart of Dallas, Calvary Church has a story as rich and vibrant as the city itself. Calvary Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith, a beacon of hope, and a living legacy. Calvary Church, or CCD as it’s affectionately known, traces its roots back to 1981. It began not with grand pronouncements, but in the quiet intimacy of a home Bible study. A small group gathered, drawn together by the teachings of Pastor Chuck Smith from Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, California. They listened to his tapes, absorbing his messages, and a community began to form. This small group, yearning for spiritual guidance, reached out to Costa Mesa. Their call was answered by Bill Philipp, who left sunny San Bernardino to shepherd this burgeoning flock in Dallas. Calvary Church continued to grow and thrive under Philipp’s leadership. Then, in 1986, the baton was passed to Pastor Rick Coburn. A man whose own life had been touched by the ministry of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, Coburn dedicated an incredible 33 years to Calvary Church. He retired in October 2019, leaving behind a legacy of faithful service. The story of Calvary Church took another turn when Pastor Rick’s son, Eric Coburn, stepped into the role of senior pastor. Pastor Eric had served at CCD until 2013. He then answered a call to plant a new church, Calvary Chapel Frisco in Texas. He nurtured its growth from a small home Bible study into a thriving congregation. When his father retired, Pastor Eric returned to Dallas to lead Calvary Church into a new era. Today, Calvary Church continues its mission of worship, teaching, and sharing the love of Jesus. Its focus remains on expositional teaching through the Bible. It strives to know and make known the heart and will of Jesus. It’s a place where the past informs the present, and the future is embraced with faith.
