Hidden amidst the bustling streets of Hiroshima, the Ishida Shrine, or 石仏社 as it’s known locally, offers a tranquil escape. It’s a place where the whispers of ancient prayers mingle with the rustling leaves and the gentle murmur of the nearby stream. Ishida Shrine is one of the 88 sacred sites that dot the landscape of Happo-cho, Hiroshima. These stone statues, known as Jizo statues, bear silent witness to the resilience of the human spirit. Each Jizo at Ishida Shrine, crafted from local flower mound rock, stands about 90cm tall and weighs around 150kg. Imagine the dedication of the local stonemasons, the Yamauchi family, who meticulously carved each statue. The statues were commissioned during the late Taisho era. Interestingly, each Jizo at Ishida Shrine bears the name and age of the person who commissioned it, etched into the right side of the statue. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the lives of those who lived in Hiroshima during that time. Some of the statues, particularly those numbered 75 and above, remain anonymous, possibly because the commissioners were too old or could not be identified. Today, the local community works tirelessly to preserve the Ishida Shrine and its Jizo statues. They’ve even created walking routes, known as the “mountain course” and the “village course,” that guide visitors through the area. The mountain course, covering statues 1 to 28, takes about 90 minutes to ascend and 15 minutes to connect to the village course via Mt. Tombstone. The descent, covering statues 28 to 43, takes about an hour. The village course, for statues 43 to 88, takes about two hours on relatively flat terrain. Remember, safety is paramount. Be mindful of falling rocks, and avoid walking alone. Travel with companions. Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing. Let the serenity of Ishida Shrine wash over you, as you connect with the history and spiritual heart of Hiroshima.
