Feel the sea breeze caress your face. We stand before Pomègues the largest of the Frioul Islands. This island a mere 2.7 kilometers long holds a fascinating history.

Pomègues boasts a raw beauty. Its chalky-white cliffs and tiny creeks are breathtaking. The Calanque de la crine a cove sometimes called Tahiti beach is truly stunning. Its crystal-clear waters invite you to explore.

For centuries Pomègues served as a quarantine island. Its isolated location was perfect for those with contagious diseases. This grim history contrasts sharply with the island’s present-day beauty. Birds abound here. Yellow-legged gulls are common. You’ll also spot storm petrels crested cormorants and shearwaters. The cliffs are home to blue rock thrushes peregrine falcons and even owls. The European leaf-toed gecko a nocturnal reptile is also native to this special place.

A 17th-century port now houses a fish farm. It specializes in sea bass and sea bream a testament to Pomègues’ enduring connection to the sea. The island also has several fortifications. The Batterie de Cavaux in the southwest requires a 45-minute walk from the port. The Pomèguet Tower in the center even starred in the French TV series Draculi & Gandolfi. Fort Pomègues sits at the northern end. It’s near a 19th-century mole connecting it to Ratonneau.

Pomègues has a unique microclimate influenced by the Mistral a strong cold wind. The weather is often hot and sunny perfect for exploring. The island thrives with around 200 species of xerophytes and halophytes plants adapted to arid conditions. You’ll find mastic rosemary and even Aleppo pines. Some plants like the sand lily are found nowhere else in the Calanques National Park. Threatened species like the sea daffodil and the Marseille Milk vetch surprisingly persist here.

While Pomègues itself lacks restaurants remember that the ferry to Pomègues drops you off at neighboring Ratonneau. Ratonneau has a marina restaurants and cafes with waterfront terraces. Enjoy the locally caught seafood or maybe some ice cream. Souvenir shops are also available there. Both islands are easily explored on foot.

So breathe in the fresh air. Soak in the stunning views. Remember your visit to Pomègues. It’s an island that’s as much a part of Marseille’s past as it is its present.
