Remuera Library

Hidden amongst the bustling streets of Remuera, the Remuera Library stands as a silent sentinel of knowledge and history. Did you know that this grand building, opened in 1926, isn’t just a place to borrow books? It’s a time capsule, echoing with stories of the past. Remuera Library’s story begins much earlier, in 1915, in a humble row of brick shops further down Remuera Road. These shops housed Remuera’s first library. In a quirky twist of fate, parts of these original shops were later used to build the Point Chevalier library. Remuera Library, as we know it today, was designed by the renowned architectural firm Gummer and Ford. Their innovative, largely open-plan design, blending Neo-Georgian and Arts and Crafts styles, earned them a prestigious NZIA Gold Medal in 1928. The building’s centerpiece was a large lecture hall, a hub for intellectual discourse in the community. As times changed, so did the library. With dwindling interest in public lectures, the hall was repurposed to accommodate the library’s ever-growing collection. A once-vibrant space for public speaking became a sanctuary for silent study. The library continued to evolve, undergoing various additions in the mid-20th century. Partition walls segmented the space, altering its original character. However, a major restoration project in 2002 breathed new life into the aging building. The additions from the 50s and 60s were removed. A new disability ramp was installed, and the lecture hall entrance, dormant for decades, was reopened. The staff workroom expanded, cleverly utilizing the former stage. This meticulous restoration earned the Remuera Library another NZIA medal in 2004, this time in the Heritage and Conservation category. Even a sundial outside the library has a story to tell. In 2006, a debate sparked over the gnomon’s direction, questioning its accuracy. This seemingly small detail highlights the community’s close connection to their beloved library. Today, Remuera Library continues to serve as a vital community hub, a testament to its enduring legacy. The building stands as a beautiful blend of old and new, where the whispers of history intertwine with the quiet rustle of turning pages.
