Rue Gérando is located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. It begins at 10 Avenue Trudaine. It ends at 93 Rue de Rochechouart. The metro line 2 serves it at the Anvers station.

The street is named after Joseph-Marie Degérando. He was also known as Baron d’Empire. Born in Lyon, he died in Paris on November 10, 1842. Degérando was a linguist. He was also a pedagogue and philanthropist. He was a forerunner in anthropology. He pioneered participant observation. Degérando was close to Napoleon Bonaparte. This connection likely helped in naming the street in his honor. It happened 20 years after his death.

The street was created in 1871. It was built on land from the old Montmartre slaughterhouse. A decree officially named it Rue Gérando. The decree was made following a report. It came from the Minister Secretary of State for the Interior Department. It considered an order from July 10, 1816. The proposals of the Seine’s prefect were reviewed.

Article 5 of the decree specified the naming. One road parallel to Boulevard Rochechouart was named Rue Gérando. Another road parallel to Avenue Trudaine was to be named Rue Quesnay. However, Rue Quesnay was never built. Article 17 tasked the Minister Secretary of State. They were to execute the decree. It was made at the Palace of Fontainebleau on August 10, 1868.

Rue Gérando stretches 172 meters. It offers a glimpse into the past. The street’s width is 12 meters. Its creation was part of a broader urban redevelopment. It transformed the area. The transformation replaced the old slaughterhouse.

Today, Rue Gérando is a public road. It’s a reminder of Joseph-Marie Degérando’s contributions. He was a key figure in French intellectual history. The street links Avenue Trudaine and Rue de Rochechouart. It serves as a route for locals and visitors.
