Did you know that Holy Corinthians Baptist Church began its journey on June 23 1974? A small gathering at 3808 West Polk Street marked the church’s humble beginnings. Rev A T Tilly served as Moderator and Rev Curtis Brooks as Secretary. Mother Cornelia Scott suggested the name Holy Corinthian. It was a name that would echo through decades. Rev C T Baker became the church’s first Founder and Pastor. Sixty-five members joined that very first year.
Holy Corinthians Baptist Church moved several times. It initially worshipped at 3808 West Polk Street. Then it relocated to the House of Prayer on West Roosevelt Road. In 1976 the church found a new home at 2301 South California Avenue. Seven years later in 1981 the mortgage was burned. The congregation had grown to over 1000 members. This is a testament to the dedication and growth of the church.
The church continued its expansion. By 2006 it was decided that Holy Corinthians needed a new location. A sale was completed in 2007. The church found temporary residence at Lathrop Academy School. Soon after Pastor Baker purchased the First Baptist Church in Maywood Illinois. The church held its first service in Maywood on October 27 2007. The journey continued. This move was a major turning point in the church’s history.
Sadly in February 2011 Holy Corinthians lost its beloved Pastor Baker. He had urged his members to stay together. The church he founded continued. Rev David Bailey became Pastor in 2011. He had previously served as an Associate Minister under Baker. A Food Pantry was established in 2014 through the C T Baker Performing Arts Center. Rev Keenan Bond was elected Pastor in August 2016. The church continues to serve its community.
The church faced the challenges of the Coronavirus pandemic. While many churches closed Holy Corinthians remained open. Services were streamed online. Open-air services were also held when weather permitted. The church’s commitment to its community is remarkable. Holy Corinthians Baptist Church continues to thrive a testament to its enduring faith and spirit. Its story is one of perseverance growth and unwavering dedication to its mission.
