Seventy years of friendship. That’s what we celebrate here at the Embassy of Indonesia in Mexico City. This embassy is the main hub for Indonesian diplomatic efforts in Mexico. Indonesia also has consulate offices in Cancún Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Mexico and Indonesia didn’t start talking until 1953. This was just four years after Indonesia’s National Revolution in 1949. The revolution ended Dutch colonial rule. In 2023 the two countries celebrated 70 years of knowing each other.
The connection between our people goes way back. Think about the Manila-Acapulco Galleons. These Spanish ships moved countless people and goods. They traveled between hemispheres. They connected the lands that became our two countries. Imagine sailors from different worlds meeting for the first time.
Today Mexico and Indonesia work together in many groups. We are part of APEC. That is the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. We also belong to the Forum of East Asia-Latin America Cooperation. Both are in the G-20 which is a group of major economies. Also MIKTA. That is a partnership between Mexico Indonesia South Korea Turkey and Australia. Both nations are part of the United Nations. We both work with the World Trade Organization too.
Trade is booming between Mexico and Indonesia. We’ve signed some big trade deals. Mexico buys textiles rubber palm oil and gold from Indonesia. Indonesia gets silver copper cotton farm machines and oil products from Mexico.
