Across the street from the First Baptist Church of Kennedale, a historical marker stands tall. It whispers tales of a resilient congregation. The First Baptist Church of Kennedale has a rich history. It has served the community for over a century. The historical marker tells us that the church’s story likely began before 1887. In those early days, the congregation gathered in a simple schoolhouse. They held baptisms in nearby creeks and a small lake, accompanied by the hymn “Shall We Gather at The River.” In 1887, land was officially deeded to the Kennedale Baptist Church. A few years later, in 1895, the church joined the Tarrant County Baptist Association. The community tabernacle, shared with the Methodists, hosted larger gatherings and revivals. By 1896, the congregation had their own one-room building. Reverend G. W. Green served as their pastor. The church continued to grow. A parsonage was built on the property in 1938. By 1940, an addition to the original building was necessary. In 1954, a new two-story Austin stone structure was erected. It boasted tall stained glass windows and a balcony in the auditorium. Tragically, this beautiful building was destroyed by fire just five years later, in 1959. Undeterred, the church members rallied. They raised funds, sold the parsonage, and built a fellowship hall. By 1961, a new church building, facing east, stood as a testament to their unwavering faith. The First Baptist Church of Kennedale has a long tradition of community service. The Women’s Missionary Union, established in 1903, and a taped ministry for shut-ins are just two examples of their dedication. The First Baptist Church of Kennedale’s story is one of resilience, faith, and community. It stands as a reminder of the power of faith to overcome adversity and the importance of community in times of need.
