In 1872, a young teacher named Hector Gonsalphe Fontaine embarked on a journey to Japan. He spent three years there, immersing himself in the culture and teaching French. Little did he know this experience would shape his future and the very street we stand on today, Rue Hector Gonsalphe Fontaine. Upon returning to France, Fontaine, along with his future father-in-law, established a school in Asnières-sur-Seine. The Institution Belin-Fontaine nurtured young minds, and Fontaine’s reputation as an educator grew. His path led him to become the head of studies at the Paris Business School in 1884. Rue Hector Gonsalphe Fontaine is more than just a street name. It’s a tribute to a man who dedicated his life to education and public service. Fontaine served as the mayor of Asnières-sur-Seine for many years, from 1886 to 1901 and again from 1904 to 1920. He was deeply involved in the community. He presided over the Philotechnical Association of Asnières and the Mutual Aid Society. He also led the Mutual School Society of the city. His commitment extended beyond the local community. He served as a general councillor for the Seine department. He even visited the Familistère de Guise, a social palace built by Jean-Baptiste André Godin, a utopian industrialist, on July 17, 1913. Interestingly, Fontaine noted in the visitor’s book that he was a cousin of the Godin family. Fontaine’s contributions were recognized with numerous honors. He received the Palmes d’Officier d’Académie in 1885 and the rosette of Officer of Public Instruction in 1890. He was also appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1897 and Officer in 1914. His dedication to mutualism was further rewarded with a gold medal in 1900. Today, on Rue Hector Gonsalphe Fontaine, we find not only residences but also the EHPAD Résidence Fontaine, a care facility for the elderly. It stands as a quiet reminder of the enduring legacy of a man who served his community with dedication and vision.
