Amidst the bustling city of Bonn, a pivotal moment for the future of energy unfolded. Right here at the Willy-Brandt-Allee, IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, took its first breath on January 26, 2009. IRENA’s founding in Bonn wasn’t a spontaneous event. It was the culmination of decades of discussions and growing global concern about climate change and the need for clean energy. The seeds were sown back in 1981 at a UN conference in Nairobi, then nurtured through various international gatherings. The 2004 Bonn International Renewable Energy Conference itself played a crucial role, voicing support for the agency’s creation. IRENA’s birth here marked a turning point. Seventy-five nations signed the IRENA Statute, signaling a global commitment to shifting the world’s energy paradigm. The very next day, a preparatory commission was formed to lay the groundwork for this new intergovernmental organization. This commission held its first session right here in Bonn, fresh on the heels of IRENA’s founding conference. Between 2009 and 2011, five sessions paved the way for IRENA’s formal establishment. These sessions tackled the complex task of building the agency’s structure and operations. One key decision was selecting Abu Dhabi as IRENA’s interim headquarters. The preparatory commission concluded its work in 2011, marking IRENA’s official launch and the beginning of a new chapter in the quest for a sustainable energy future. IRENA, born in Bonn, continues to champion renewable energy worldwide, working towards a cleaner and more sustainable tomorrow.
