Six meters tall it stands. The Hombre Corriendo sculpture is a testament to artistry and the spirit of the 1968 Olympics. Germán Cueto created this bronze masterpiece. It is located on Avenida Insurgentes Sur. The sculpture stands in front of Estadio Olímpico México 68.

The Hombre Corriendo is more than just a sculpture. It is part of the Ruta de la Amistad. This route was developed for the 1968 Olympics Cultural Olympiad. The route features 22 stations representing friendship among participating countries. Germán Cueto was one of three guest artists invited to contribute.

Born in Mexico City in 1893, Cueto initially studied at the Academia de San Carlos. He later pursued independent studies after a five-year stay in Europe. He became an innovative abstract sculptor. He joined the Academia de Artes in 1968 as a founding member.

The Hombre Corriendo depicts a human figure in motion. It uses two interlacing bodies. The sculpture integrates seamlessly with the volcanic rock landscape. This is due to its simple yet striking design. The volcanic stone showcases the area’s original flora. It seems to travel over the mantle of the Xitle volcano. This was a joint project with REPSA.

Made of bronze, the Hombre Corriendo demonstrates Cueto’s mastery of the material. The sculpture’s rough finish complements the Pedregal de San Ángel Ecological Area. It serves as an introduction to the area.

The Hombre Corriendo was restored in 2007. The UNAM currently maintains it. It remains a landmark, though seldom seen, on Insurgentes Sur. It shows Cueto’s impact on Mexican sculpture. The Hombre Corriendo stands as a symbol of movement, unity, and the enduring legacy of the 1968 Olympics.
