Did the Picts truly foresee Roslin’s destiny? Legend claims they founded this village in 203 AD. Fast forward to 1303. Roslin became a battleground in the First War of Scottish Independence. Picture the clash of swords and the thunder of hooves as John Comyn led a smaller Scottish force to a stunning victory against a much larger English army. Centuries later, Roslin became renowned for a different kind of feat. In 1996, at the Roslin Institute, Dolly the sheep became the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell, a groundbreaking moment in scientific history. But Roslin’s heart lies in its captivating landmarks. Rosslyn Chapel, shrouded in Templar lore and Grail legends, gained international fame through Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”. This ornate chapel, commissioned by William Sinclair in 1446, holds countless stories within its intricately carved walls. One tale speaks of a master mason, consumed by jealousy, who murdered his apprentice after the young man completed the breathtaking Apprentice Pillar. Nearby stands Roslin Castle, perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking Roslin Glen. Sections of the castle date back to the 14th century. The castle has witnessed dramatic events, including a fire that prompted an Earl to risk his chaplain’s life to save his precious library. Another story tells of a descendant who, centuries later, unearthed a hidden room filled with ancient manuscripts. Roslin Glen Country Park offers tranquil walks amidst the ruins of Scotland’s largest gunpowder mill. This mill, operational from the early 1800s until 1954, played a vital role in supplying gunpowder to the British Army, impacting conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to both World Wars. Roslin, a village brimming with history, legend, and scientific achievement, offers a truly unique experience.
