Is that old banyan tree looking at us? It has witnessed Toa Payoh’s evolution. We are standing before Ci Ern Ge. This tree shrine embodies Singapore’s unique blend of cultures and beliefs.

Ci Ern Ge started as a simple worship site. It was founded at a banyan tree. The tree survived Toa Payoh’s redevelopment in the 1960s. Temples and kampongs were cleared for progress. Yet this tree stood defiant gaining respect. Locals saw it as a deity tree.

Ci Ern Ge now houses several deities. Guan Yin is enshrined here. She is the Buddhist-Taoist Goddess of Mercy. Taoist deities are also honored. Tian Gong Datuk Kong and Tua Pek Kong all have a place here.

During the redevelopment the banyan seemed indestructible. It earned the name “shen shu”. This Mandarin term means deity tree.

In 2013 disaster struck Ci Ern Ge. A large part of the tree broke off in a storm. The crown was damaged and fell onto the shrine. Restoration was essential. The shrine held religious social and heritage value. The Toa Payoh Merchants’ Association acted quickly. They collected S$70000. These funds came from members and public donations. The shrine was restored and the tree stabilized.

Few devotees connect Ci Ern Ge to the banyan. Many know little about the tree. They know it has stood here for a long time. A Malaysian woman visits Ci Ern Ge daily. She believes it is more accurate than other shrines.

The Toa Payoh Merchants Association oversees Ci Ern Ge’s operations. They collect donations and handle pest control. Mr Pan is the manager. Mdm Yeo is the caretaker. Her mother cared for the shrine before her.

Mr Pan said nobody knows how tree worship started here.

The story of Ci Ern Ge is more than a simple tale. It’s a story of resilience. It is a story of faith. It is a story of community. It stands as a symbol of Toa Payoh’s heart. This unique tree shrine reflects Singapore’s spirit. It is a blend of tradition and progress.
