Tucked away on Nelmes Road stands a testament to faith and community, Nelmes United Reformed Church. This church began its journey in 1906. It was then known as Hornchurch Congregational Church.
Initial support came from Romford Congregational Church. The early congregation met in a hall on Berther Road. These humble beginnings paved the way for a permanent home.
In 1909, Nelmes United Reformed Church found its place on Nelmes Road. Thomas Dowsett gifted the land. He was from Southend-on-Sea. His generosity laid the foundation for this house of worship.
Over the years Nelmes United Reformed Church has grown. A new hall was added in 1960. This addition provided more space for activities. It allowed the church to better serve its community.
Nelmes United Reformed Church offers a warm welcome to all. The church strives to nurture faith. It seeks to engage with the community. The church has a variety of activities.
Sunday worship lies at the heart of Nelmes United Reformed Church. The church also holds prayer meetings and Bible study groups. These gatherings strengthen the bonds among members.
The church actively supports several causes. Nelmes United Reformed Church is engaged across five churches. There is something to be involved in all through the year. They champion Fair Trade. They also support the local Food Bank. Nelmes United Reformed Church is beginning its journey with Churches Together in Hornchurch.
Nelmes United Reformed Church recognizes its responsibility. The church recognizes its obligation to be stewards of God’s creation. They are working towards a Silver Eco Church Award. They have already achieved a Bronze Eco Church Award.
Nelmes United Reformed Church has a Roll of Honour. It commemorates those who served in World War I. The names are surmounted by five National Flags. The flags represent Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Russia and an unidentified country.
Thirteen names are inscribed. These include Harold James Banyard, G H Cox and Arthur G Dohoo. Also listed are Frank Douse, Lionel Draycott and Stanley N Evans. Sydney Harvey and Ernest James Haywood are remembered. William Arthur Haywood and G Maidmint are also on the Roll.
The United Reformed Church formed in 1972. It was established with the merger of the Congregational Church and Presbyterian Church.
Today, Nelmes United Reformed Church stands as a beacon. It symbolizes faith, community and service. It continues to evolve. It remains a vital part of Emerson Park.
