Did you know the Auckland Grammar War Memorial has a soul? It stands before us. This memorial isn’t just stone and bronze. It embodies sacrifice and remembrance.

Auckland Grammar School was established in 1850. Sir George Grey wanted a school for all New Zealanders. The school officially opened in 1869. It started with 78 boys. The current Mountain Road site was acquired between 1911 and 1913.

During World War I, the school built the Main Block. It was designed in the Spanish Mission style. The War Memorial was built to honor those who served. It remembers those who died in World War I and II. Work on the Auckland Grammar War Memorial began in 1922. It features an octagonal column. A bronze figure tops the column. This figure represents the Soul of Man striving upwards.

In 1918, 309 Old Boys and masters died in World War I. Peter Stanes and Andrew Connolly researched these names. They ensured their sacrifice was remembered. In 1953, extensions to the Auckland Grammar War Memorial were completed. Sir Willoughby Norrie unveiled them. The names of fallen Old Boys were listed on the memorial walls.

The Auckland Grammar War Memorial has undergone changes. In 2011, the World War I War Memorial was refurbished. Plaques were updated in 2018. They recorded the names of 24 newly discovered Old Boys. Their sacrifices had never been officially recognized.

The Auckland Grammar War Memorial stands as a testament. It represents the school’s commitment to remembering its fallen. It connects past students to the present. The memorial’s enduring presence reminds us of duty and sacrifice. It ensures their stories will continue. Generations of students will know their names.
