Opened in 2006 Masjid Jami Baabussalam stands proudly in Jakarta Utara. Its name meaning “Gate of Peace” echoes the serenity within. This simple mosque has a Middle Eastern architectural style. A green and yellow building topped with a dome and two small minarets. Inside Masjid Jami Baabussalam is spacious. It has two floors of prayer halls. The main prayer hall is around 200 square meters. The upper floor adds another 150 square meters. Together they can hold about 1000 worshippers.

The floors are covered in light green tiles topped with dark green carpeting. The walls are simple grey tiles. The only decoration is a wall clock. The mihrab a special prayer niche is eye-catching. It’s lined with dark green tiles. Above it is a beautiful arch. The arch displays vibrant red green blue and yellow glass. Islamic calligraphy adds to its beauty. An antique clock a prayer rug for the imam and a simple wooden mimbar are all inside the mihrab.

The second floor is accessible via stairs. It has a green railing with green calligraphy on a brown background. A square void in the front offers a view of the dome’s interior. The dome’s underside is painted blue. Twelve lights hang from above though some are broken. Ten wall-mounted fans and two ceiling fans help to keep the mosque cool.

On Fridays additional space is used for prayers. Masjid Jami Baabussalam’s impact extends beyond its walls. The mosque plays an important role in the local community.
