Did the wind carry whispers of emperors as it rustled through these trees? Here at the Rastplatz am Kaiserweg, history echoes around the Zwenkauer See. This rest stop isn’t just a place to catch your breath. It’s a tribute to a bygone era. The Rastplatz am Kaiserweg opened on March 20, 2014. It offers stunning views of the KAP ZWENKAU harbor and the lake’s entire east-west axis. Before the open waters of the lake existed, there was dense Harth Forest. A path called the Kaiserweg, or Emperor’s Way, wound through this woodland. City dwellers would escape here, seeking solace amidst the trees. The mining operations eventually consumed the forest. But the memory of the Kaiserweg lived on. When this rest stop was built, it was christened Rastplatz am Kaiserweg. The wooden structure itself evokes the arm of a mining excavator. This design is no accident. It’s a nod to the winning entry of a student competition held by the Zweckverband Neue Harth and the HTWK University. Students Torsten Glaschke and Alexander Schierbaum’s “Auslegungssache” design beautifully blends the past and present. So take a moment, rest your weary feet, and appreciate the view.
