Standing before the grand stone houses of The Grange, it’s hard to imagine the wild and desolate landscape that once stood here. This affluent Edinburgh suburb, characterized by its Victorian mansions and large gardens, was once a vast expanse of moorland, a hunting ground for Scottish kings. In the heart of this untamed wilderness, a small farm existed, known as St Giles’ Grange. It was here, in 1592, that a tower house was built, marking the beginning of The Grange’s long and fascinating history. This tower house, known as Grange House, eventually became the home of Sir Thomas Dick Lauder, who dramatically transformed the estate in the 19th century. He commissioned the construction of many of the opulent villas that line The Grange’s streets today, creating a haven for Edinburgh’s wealthy and influential. The house itself was expanded and modernized, becoming a grand baronial mansion. Despite protests, Grange House was sadly demolished in 1936, leaving behind only a few reminders of its existence. The stone wyverns that once adorned its gateposts now stand proudly on Grange Loan, silent sentinels of a bygone era. As you walk along its streets, you can almost hear the echoes of carriages rolling past, and imagine the laughter and conversation of distinguished guests enjoying a garden party. Today, The Grange continues to be a desirable place to live, a testament to Sir Thomas’ enduring vision of a tranquil haven within the city. The area is home to a diverse community of artists, academics, business leaders, and everyday citizens, all drawn by its unparalleled beauty and charm. So, look around, and let your imagination wander through time, exploring the stories of the people who have lived and worked in The Grange, leaving behind their legacy in its streets and architecture.
