At TV UNAM something special began in 2005. This is the story of Mexico’s educational television network. It is owned by the National Autonomous University of Mexico UNAM.
TV UNAM programming includes educational telecourses. They are for UNAM students. You can also find public affairs, documentaries, and cultural content. Some TV UNAM shows air on the nationwide Edusat service too.
Back on December 5, 2000, UNAM started broadcasting on analog channel 60. This paved the way for their own network. It broadcast for five years. Then in 2005, it became a digital-only station. It was the first of its kind in Mexico.
TV UNAM officially launched on October 24, 2005. It was available on cable and satellite TV systems. These included Cablevisión and SKY. By 2014, all cable systems in Mexico had to carry TV UNAM. This was alongside other public and cultural stations. With help from OPMA now SPR it expanded its coverage. It became an over-the-air digital subchannel. TV UNAM typically broadcasts from 8 am to midnight or later. This depends on the schedule.
XHUNAM-TDT operates on digital channel 20 in Mexico City. But it was mainly for experimental transmissions until 2017. It did not broadcast TV UNAM’s programming. SPR’s Mexico City station XHSPR-TDT carried it on channel 20.1 until March 2024.
Fast forward to today. TV UNAM operates independently. The National Autonomous University of Mexico guarantees its autonomy. The director is appointed by UNAM’s rector.
In 2023, TV Radio UNAM received a budget of MXN 155.7 million. That’s about US$10.4 million. This comes from the university. The channel also earns money through sponsorships. But most of its funding comes from state subsidies.
Editorial independence is key at TV Radio UNAM. The governing structures protect it from government pressure. This ensures pluralism and diversity. You’ll find programs supporting President López Obrador. You will also find shows critical of the government.
Academic John Ackerman hosts a show featuring government officials. Another academic, Pedro Salazar, offers legal analysis critical of the government.
UNAM’s organic law ensures editorial independence. TV Radio UNAM has a Code of Ethics. An Ombudsman monitors compliance and handles complaints.
In October 2023, XHUNAM changed its frequency to VHF channel 11. Testing began in February 2024. On March 5, 2024, XHUNAM formally started broadcasting the TV UNAM signal. XHSPR removed the 480i signal the previous night.
