Built in 1958 Kingsdale Foundation School stands proudly in West Dulwich. This remarkable institution initially housed almost 2000 pupils. Kingsdale Foundation School faced challenges in the 1970s. Its academic performance was poor. In 1998 the school was placed under special measures.
A significant transformation followed. A new management team was appointed. A partnership was formed with School Works. This initiative focused on improved management and design. A £30 million investment led to a state-of-the-art building. The existing structures were used. The learning environment was significantly improved for the students.
Kingsdale Foundation School boasts specialisms in mathematics physical education and the performing and expressive arts. Scholarships are available for students demonstrating aptitude in these areas. Music and physical education scholarships are assessed upon entry to Year 7. Art and mathematics scholarships are assessed after students secure a place. Each scholarship provides approximately £1000 per annum in additional support and resources.
The school’s remarkable turnaround is reflected in its Ofsted ratings. In July 2017 Kingsdale Foundation School was rated Outstanding in all categories. This included its sixth form. The same judgement was given following an inspection in 2023. Kingsdale’s academic achievements have been equally impressive. In 2020 despite the pandemic over ten students achieved at least nine Grade 9s. Over 100 students achieved four or more Grades 8 and 9. Almost 90% of students achieved good or better passes in English and mathematics.
Kingsdale’s success extends beyond academic results. Its unique architecture is a testament to its transformation. The modernist building initially designed with limited resources now houses a music hall. It is an egg-shaped pod projecting into the quad. The building has been featured on Channel 4’s Secret Life of Buildings. This highlighted the positive impact of the building’s design on student learning.
