Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Mexico, lies the enchanting municipality of Juchitepec. Juchitepec, meaning “Hill of the Flowers” in Nahuatl, beckons with its rich history and cultural treasures. Juchitepec’s story begins in 1381. A ruler named Acamapixtli founded this charming town. Before the Spanish arrived, the Olmec people called this area home. Juchitepec’s location on Hernán Cortés’s route made it one of the first places he conquered. A decree in 1531 officially defined Juchitepec’s eight districts. These districts were Cuautzozongo, Calayuco, Zancalco, Oacalco, Tetlancheo, Tepepatlacher, Tlacotlapilco, and Tlacaelcalpam. In 1880, Juchitepec officially became a town. The Mexican Revolution left its mark on Juchitepec. In 1911, Zapatista groups entered the town, demanding funds from the wealthy. Later, modern amenities like plumbing and electricity arrived. Today, Juchitepec boasts a library and a cultural center. Though somewhat isolated, Juchitepec’s picturesque streets and gardens have attracted filmmakers and advertisers. The Church of Santo Domingo, built in the Baroque style, graces the town center. While Juchitepec doesn’t have its own native dance, traditional dances like the “Dance of Moors and Christians” and chinelos from Morelos are performed during festivals. The local cuisine tantalizes the taste buds. From savory mole, barbecue, and mixiote to unique carnitas, popcorn, cheese tamales, and tlacoyos, there is a dish for everyone. The traditional drink, tecui, offers a refreshing complement to these delicious meals. Juchitepec in the State of Mexico is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
