A silent sentinel stands before us. This unassuming plaque marks the former site of Bonn’s synagogue. It’s a poignant reminder a chapter of Bonn’s history. A history etched in both stone and sorrow.

Imagine the bustling life that once surrounded this very spot. In 1878 a magnificent synagogue opened its doors here. Architect Hermann Eduard Maertens designed the building. It was a three-aisled basilica. Four small towers adorned its facade. A central rose window featured the Star of David. The synagogue served a thriving Jewish community numbering around 1200 members. They were merchants bankers doctors artists and professors. Their presence enriched the cultural tapestry of Bonn.

But this vibrant community would face unimaginable horrors. On November 9 1938 Kristallnacht the synagogue was destroyed by Nazi thugs. It was set ablaze reduced to ashes. This act of barbarism was not an isolated incident. Synagogues in Poppelsdorf Mehlem Bad Godesberg and Beuel also suffered the same fate. This was a systematic destruction of a community a people.

Hundreds of Bonn’s Jewish residents were persecuted imprisoned or murdered. Few survived the Nazi regime. Many fled the country seeking safety abroad. Their stories their losses are forever etched into this plaque. A small memorial stands in place of the once majestic synagogue.

In 1953 the Jewish community was given back the land. They exchanged it for land on Wörthstrasse where Bonn’s current synagogue was built. The street name changed in 1978 becoming Tempelstrasse Temple Street. The plaque serves as a solemn testament to their resilience their enduring legacy. It speaks volumes of the inhumanity of hatred the importance of remembering. Let us reflect on this sacred site remembering those we lost. Learning from history ensuring such atrocities are never repeated.
