Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders

Amidst the vibrant energy of Austin, Texas, lies a unique institution dedicated to fostering the next generation of female leaders: the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders. The Ann Richards School, affectionately known as ARS, isn’t just a school. Sadly, she passed away before witnessing the school’s opening. The Ann Richards School occupies the site of the former Porter Middle School in south Austin. The campus has undergone significant transformations, including a rebuild completed in 2022, thanks to a 2017 bond. The school’s curriculum is a powerful blend of rigorous academics, leadership development, and a focus on STEM subjects. Students delve into biomedical science, engineering, or media technology pathways, preparing them for college and future careers. The Ann Richards School is also part of the Young Women’s Preparatory Network, connecting it to a sisterhood of similar institutions across the country. Distinguished figures like Chelsea Clinton, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Angela Davis have visited the campus, inspiring students with their stories and insights. Admission to the Ann Richards School is competitive, with a lottery system ensuring a fair chance for all applicants. But the Ann Richards School is more than just textbooks and tests. It’s a place where students are encouraged to embrace wellness through yoga, outdoor activities, and a comprehensive health program. It’s where they discover their voices through extracurriculars like the student-run yearbook, “The Constellation,” and newspaper, “The Polaris Press.” And it’s where they learn the power of teamwork and sportsmanship on the cross country and volleyball teams. The Ann Richards School Foundation, a non-profit organization, plays a crucial role in supporting the school’s mission. Through events like the “Reach for the Stars,” the foundation ensures that these bright young stars have the resources they need to shine.
