Could a mosque be “new” yet hail from the 17th century? Here at the Mehdiye Cami, also known as Yeni Cami or “New Mosque”, this paradox comes to life. The Mehdiye Cami stands proudly next to the Spice Bazaar, a vibrant testament to a complex and fascinating history. Construction began in 1597 under the watchful eye of Safiye Sultan, mother of Sultan Mehmet III. She envisioned a powerful symbol of Islamic influence, particularly in the then predominantly Jewish Eminönü district. This ambition wasn’t universally welcomed, and construction halted after Sultan Mehmet III’s death. Fire then ravaged the incomplete structure, leaving it in ruins for decades. The Mehdiye Cami’s story resumed with the determination of another royal mother, the mother of Sultan Mehmet IV. She not only revived the project but expanded it into a külliye, a complex encompassing the mosque and other buildings, including the Spice Bazaar. Finally completed in 1665, the Mehdiye Cami became known as the New Valide Sultan Mosque (Yeni Valide Sultan Camii), later shortened to Yeni Cami, meaning New Mosque. This “newness” refers to its completion relative to other grand mosques like the Süleymaniye and the Blue Mosque, even though its construction predates the latter. While the sixty-six domes and two minarets dominate the skyline, the real treasures lie within. The courtyard’s şadırvan (fountain) offers a tranquil prelude to the stunning interior. Step inside to find a symphony of blue, green, and white İznik tiles, accented with gold and marble. Gaze up at the breathtaking main dome, nearly 18 meters across, adorned with the names of the first four caliphs. The Mehdiye Cami offers a haven of peace, a quiet respite from the bustling city just beyond its walls.
