“A ladies’ bridge” – you’ve probably heard that phrase, haven’t you? Well, that’s what some call Waterloo Road Bridge, right here in front of us. You see, during the Second World War, it was one of the very few bridges in London constructed mainly by women. They had to step up and do the work because the men were fighting. Now, you may think you’re standing on one bridge, but what you’re looking at now is actually the second Waterloo Bridge. The first one was built by John Rennie in 1817 – a magnificent structure with nine arches and Grecian-Doric columns. People loved it, but over time, it fell into disrepair. By the 1920s, London County Council knew they had to replace it. The current bridge was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and while it wasn’t finished until 1945, it was the only bridge in London to be impacted by World War II. It was the only one that got damaged during the war. The bridge is still there today – and you can see for yourself why it’s a favorite spot for Londoners. The views are breathtaking – you can see the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, and even the London Eye in the distance. It’s a perfect spot to take a photo.
