“Deptford’s Tribute to Her Gallant Sons” is etched into the Portland stone. The Deptford War Memorial stands as a solemn reminder of sacrifice. It honors those who were faithful unto death.

This memorial sits at the corner of Lewisham Way and Upper Brockley Road. It marks one end of the Deptford WW1 Memorial Gardens. The gardens stretch along Lewisham Way towards Breakspears Road. Deptford War Memorial is more than just a monument. It’s a place for reflection.

The Deptford War Memorial was unveiled on July 7 1921. Major-General Sir Charles Townsend and the Bishop of Southwark officiated. The column is made of Portland stone. It reaches 23 feet high. It rests on a double base. A flaming torch surmounts it. The structure stands on several steps.

Figures of a soldier and a sailor adorn the column. They stand with arms reversed and bowed heads. The soldier is on the east side. The sailor is on the west side. These figures represent the sacrifice of servicemen. William Wagstaff created these figures. He collaborated with builder Richards on the central shaft.

The inscription reads “Deptford’s Tribute To Her Gallant Sons Who Were Faithful Unto Death 1914-1918 1939-1945”. The memorial commemorates both World War I and World War II. Although no names are listed on the memorial itself, it stands for all who served.

The Deptford War Memorial is a Grade II listed building. This means it is protected for its historical and architectural significance. Historic England maintains its listing on the National Heritage List.

Originally, Deptford was a separate borough. In 1965, it became part of the Borough of Lewisham. However, the memorial still bears the name “Deptford”. It serves as a lasting reminder of the area’s history.

Imagine the crowds gathered here in 1921. They came to honor the fallen. They listened to speeches. They paid their respects. Today, we continue that tradition. We remember those who served. The Deptford War Memorial remains a powerful symbol of remembrance. It’s a place where we can reflect on the cost of war.
