Gaoqiao Martyrs Cemetery serves as the final resting place for these heroes. They perished in the Shanghai battles. We honor their sacrifice.
Originally named Gaoqiao Martyrs Tomb, the cemetery was established in 1954. It underwent expansion in 2003. Wu Bangguo inscribed the name above the cemetery’s entrance.
At the heart of the cemetery lies a memorial square. A monument stands tall at its center. Chen Yi inscribed it. It reads “Eternal Glory to the Heroes Who Sacrificed Themselves for the Liberation of Shanghai”. The monument reaches 19.49 meters high. Its base is 5 meters. Twelve steps lead to the monument. They symbolize May 12, 1949. This marks the start of the Shanghai battle.
Behind the monument stands a large “August 1st” sculpture. A black marble wall displays an “epilogue”. It also lists the names of the martyrs.
The Shanghai Battle of Pudong Memorial Hall is also within the cemetery. Late Hao Tian inscribed the hall’s name. The building spans 2846 square meters. Its exhibition area covers 1500 square meters. Exhibits recreate the Shanghai battle, especially the Gaoqiao battle.
Gaoqiao Martyrs Cemetery is a key site. It is protected by the State Council and Shanghai. Since 1995, it has served as a national patriotic education base. In 2009, it became a Shanghai defense education base.
In 1949, the People’s Liberation Army launched the Shanghai battle. They fought to liberate the city. The Kuomintang forces resisted fiercely. They fortified Gaoqiao. They aimed to stop the PLA’s advance. On May 25, 1949, the PLA captured Gaoqiao. This victory cut off the enemy’s escape route. It contributed greatly to Shanghai’s liberation.
The memorial square serves as a gathering place. Ceremonies and tributes take place here. It can accommodate over 2000 people. The monument stands as a solemn reminder. It honors the martyrs’ unwavering spirit.
In 2003, Pudong New Area invested over 45 million yuan. This renovated the Gaoqiao Martyrs Cemetery. Today, the cemetery features lush greenery. The layout is well-designed. The atmosphere is dignified.
The cemetery is open weekdays from 8:30 to 16:00. Visits on weekends require advance booking. During the Qingming period, opening hours are extended. They are from 8:00 to 16:00. This ensures everyone can pay their respects.
