North Sheen Recreation Ground

In the vibrant London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, nestled amongst the bustling streets of Kew, lies a hidden gem: North Sheen Recreation Ground. Affectionately known as “The Rec” by locals, this green oasis has a rich history waiting to be unearthed. North Sheen Recreation Ground first appeared on maps in 1904 as part of the undeveloped Popham Estate. The land, initially used for growing fruits and vegetables, began its transformation into a residential area around 1920. North Sheen itself became part of Kew in 1965. The recreation ground officially opened in June 1909, carved out of the former orchard belonging to the Leyborne Popham family of Littlecote House, Wiltshire. Its grounds were further extended in 1923, solidifying its role as a community hub. North Sheen Recreation Ground played an important role during the Second World War. Allotments flourished here, providing sustenance in times of scarcity. An underground public shelter stood opposite the present-day sports pavilion clubhouse, offering refuge during air raids. Today, North Sheen Recreation Ground offers a diverse range of facilities for all ages. Football pitches cater to sporting enthusiasts, while a children’s paddling pool provides refreshing summer fun. Two expansive playgrounds and a dedicated dog-free grassy area ensure a welcoming space for families and pet owners alike. Adding to its charm, the Rec is dotted with a variety of trees and shrubs, creating a serene atmosphere. At the heart of North Sheen Recreation Ground stands a modern sports pavilion clubhouse. This impressive facility, which cost £1 million, opened its doors in September 2011. Inside, you’ll find a community cafe and a spacious community hall, both of which serve as focal points for local gatherings. More recently, a new children’s adventure playground was unveiled in 2016, followed by an outdoor gym for adults in 2017. North Sheen Recreation Ground is more than just a park. It’s also the proud home of Kew Park Rangers Football Club, a local club for children. Established in 1997, the club originally started in Westerley Ware, a small park near Kew Bridge. As their numbers grew, the club relocated to North Sheen Recreation Ground in the summer of 1999, where they’ve continued to thrive. Kew Park Rangers is a Football Association Charter Standard Community Football Club, the highest accreditation awarded under The FA Charter Standard kitemark programme. The club’s name is a playful nod to Queens Park Rangers F.C., another London-based team also known as QPR. They even have a close relationship with Fulham F.C., often collaborating with their coaches. In recognition of its exceptional qualities, North Sheen Recreation Ground received the prestigious Green Flag Award in 2018. This accolade underscores the Rec’s commitment to providing a high-quality and welcoming space for the local community.
