A 1968 marvel. That’s the Compass Theatre. Right here in Ickenham this charming theatre stands proudly. It began as a simple addition to Ickenham Hall a youth centre. The Middlesex County Council had purchased Ickenham Hall in 1948. Their plan was to transform it into a vibrant hub for young people. A theatre was built behind the hall. It was a dream realised by the Theatre Director John Sherratt. He named it the Compass Theatre. In 1976 a new building connected the theatre and Ickenham Hall. It was quite the achievement.

The Compass Theatre isn’t just a building. It’s a community heart. It hosts a range of performances. Local amateur dramatic groups often hire the space. They use it for their shows. Children’s professional shows are a popular choice. Other arts activities take place within its walls. The theatre has seen countless productions over the years. Each production has added to its rich tapestry of history. Think of the countless actors and actresses. Imagine the backstage hustle and bustle. The excitement before curtain rise. The thundering applause. The sheer magic of live theatre.

The Compass Theatre has had its share of upgrades. In 1990 it underwent a significant refurbishment. Prince Edward himself had the honour of reopening it. The Compass Theatre is now home to several resident groups. This includes Argosy Players Ruislip Dramatic Society Hillingdon Musical Society and others. Professional companies such as Big Wooden Horse Theatre and Tall Stories have also graced the Compass stage. Tall Stories creators of the beloved children’s book The Gruffalo were even the theatre’s resident company until 2009. The legacy continues.

With a seating capacity of 158 this intimate theatre provides an unforgettable experience. The theatre has a concrete floor and retractable seating. It is a testament to its enduring appeal. The Compass Theatre isn’t merely a venue. It is a testament to the power of community and creativity in Ickenham. It’s a place where stories unfold. It is where memories are made. It is a vital part of London’s cultural landscape. A small jewel nestled away. It is a significant part of Ickenham’s history. It’s a must-see for theatre lovers. Come and experience the magic of the Compass Theatre.
