“Make the world your major.” That’s the inspiring motto of New York University Shanghai. NYU Shanghai is a joint-venture university. It was established in 2012. East China Normal University and New York University partnered to create it.
NYU Shanghai holds a unique position. It was the first Sino-foreign joint university. It received independent legal entity accreditation from China’s Ministry of Education. Classes are taught in both English and Chinese.
Imagine yourself as an undergraduate student here. Upon graduation you receive bachelor’s degrees from both New York University and NYU Shanghai. A global education awaits you. You can study abroad. NYU has 12 global academic centers and two degree-granting campuses.
NYU Shanghai opened its doors in September 2013. The first class had 294 students. 51% were from China. The remaining 49% came from other countries. During the 2013-2014 academic year students studied at East China Normal University. This was while the official NYU campus in Pudong was being built. The Pudong campus opened in the summer of 2014.
NYU Shanghai offers a range of programs. There are 19 majors available. You can also pursue multidisciplinary minors and specializations. To graduate you must study away for at least one semester. You can choose New York, Abu Dhabi or one of NYU’s 12 study away centers.
The university admitted 1,533 students to the Class of 2024. These students came from 44 US states and 96 countries. NYU Shanghai is geographically diverse.
NYU Shanghai also offers master’s programs and PhD programs. PhD programs are offered with other NYU schools. These include the Graduate School of Arts and Science and the Tandon School of Engineering.
NYU Shanghai houses several research institutes. These operate in collaboration with East China Normal University. Examples include the NYU-ECNU Center for Computational Chemistry and the Volatility Institute.
The mascot of NYU Shanghai is a purple Qilin. A student designed it. Students chose it through a popular vote. NYU Shanghai has sports teams. These include badminton, tennis and basketball. They compete against local universities. Recreational activities are also available. There are yoga retreats and outdoor hikes.
NYU Shanghai’s logo is adapted from NYU’s torch logo. The top half of the torch forms magnolia flower petals. The magnolia is Shanghai’s official flower. The logo represents NYU’s presence in Shanghai.
Tong Shijun is the current chancellor of NYU Shanghai. Jeffrey Lehman is the Vice Chancellor. Joanna Waley-Cohen is the Provost. Yu Lizhong was the founding chancellor.
From 2014 to 2022, NYU Shanghai was based at 1555 Century Ave in Pudong. In 2023 NYU Shanghai moved to a new campus in Qiantan. The Qiantan campus was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox. The design features four buildings in a pinwheel shape. This resembles the NYU Shanghai logo.
