A beacon of hope. That’s one way to describe the Greater Open Door Baptist Church, standing tall right here in Chicago. Greater Open Door Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of the people who built it. In the face of challenges and changes, this congregation has held steadfast to their vision, growing stronger with every passing year. Founded by Reverend Little and eight devoted individuals in 1948, the church began its journey humbly in the North Lawndale Community. They held their very first service at the George Howland School, their spirits undeterred. Imagine a young congregation, filled with hope, finding their footing and building their future, brick by spiritual brick. Picture them, moving from a schoolhouse to the pastor’s very own home when circumstances demanded it. This is the spirit that built Greater Open Door Baptist Church! The church found a true home on S. Christiana in 1949. From there, their story is one of expansion and growth, moving to Sawyer Avenue in 1954, becoming the “Greater” Open Door we know today. The church has always been a pillar of strength for the community, even weathering the passing of beloved leaders like Reverend Little and Reverend Lamar.
