Picture the Cibali Gate a relic of the Byzantine walls. This isn’t just any gate. Legend whispers of Cebe Ali Bey bursting through it on May 29 1453 during the Ottoman conquest. A plaque proudly commemorates this pivotal moment in Istanbul’s history. Cibali Mahallesi takes its very name from this courageous commander.

Welcome to Cibali Mahallesi a neighborhood nestled on the southern shore of the Golden Horn. Across the water lies Kasimpasa. Cibali sits between Ayakapi and Unkapi in the Fatih district. For centuries it was a vibrant melting pot of cultures. Spanish Jews called it home until the 18th century. Today it’s a working-class area predominantly populated by migrants from across Turkey.

But Cibali’s past is far richer than just its diverse inhabitants. Follow the main road and you’ll discover the former Cibali Tobacco Factory. Commissioned by Sultan Abdülhamid II in 1884 this magnificent building was the brainchild of the Ottoman French architect Alexander Vallaury. Under French administration until 1925 it became a symbol of Turkish industry. The factory’s legacy is long and complex. It operated until 1995 becoming an economic powerhouse. It employed thousands. Women made up two-thirds of its workforce. The factory saw its share of labor unrest and major strikes. Finally in 1997 it found new life as Kadir Has University. Its restoration uncovered hidden treasures. Beneath the factory lies a 11th-century Byzantine cistern and a 17th-century Ottoman bath. Today these historical wonders are preserved behind glass within the university grounds.

The Rezan Has Museum also graces the university campus. It boasts an extraordinary collection of Urartian jewelry one of the largest in all of Turkey. This museum is a testament to the rich history woven into the very fabric of Cibali Mahallesi.

Consider this: the Cibali Tobacco Factory a hub of activity once teeming with workers. It’s now a place of learning. This transformation symbolizes Cibali Mahallesi’s enduring spirit. It’s a neighborhood that has adapted and evolved while never forgetting its captivating past. Explore Cibali Mahallesi and discover its stories for yourself. Its past is layered its present is vibrant. Its future is yet to be written.
