This imposing structure before you is more than just an office building. It’s the National Police Headquarters of Hungary. The Országos Rendőr-főkapitányság. For years police offices were scattered throughout Budapest. This building changed everything. It centralized operations. It improved efficiency.
The Országos Rendőr-főkapitányság wasn’t always here. It’s relatively new. The building’s construction started in 1995 and was finished in 1997. Prior to its construction a deal was made. The Postabank would finance the building. In exchange the bank received numerous smaller police offices throughout the city. The final cost of the building was significantly debated.
This architectural marvel designed by Finta József is a striking sight. The building consists of two distinct parts. One is an eight-story structure. The other is a sixteen-story cylindrical tower. Police antennas on the roof reach 92 meters high. The interior is incredibly versatile. Gypsum board walls allow for easy reconfiguration. It houses approximately 900 rooms. Sixteen elevators service the building. It even boasts conference rooms recreation areas and a restaurant. Below ground lies a two-level garage complete with a car wash.
But the Országos Rendőr-főkapitányság isn’t just impressive from the outside. It’s the nerve center of Hungarian law enforcement. It houses the administrative heart of the national regional and Budapest police forces. While the building mainly handles administrative functions real police work happens below ground. There’s an operations control center and a Crime and Accident Prevention Center focused on educating children.
In February 2007 the Országos Rendőr-főkapitányság was under attack. Someone fired several shots at the building from a car. Fortunately nobody was hurt. The perpetrator was never caught. This incident underscores the building’s importance. It’s a symbol of law and order a place where the safety of Hungary is managed. This impressive building is truly more than meets the eye.
