The scent of ripe plums hangs heavy in the air. This is Balmumcu Mahallesi.

Balmumcu Mahallesi. The name itself evokes a sense of mystery doesn’t it? It means “wax factory” a clue to its intriguing past. For centuries before the modern buildings rose this land was a royal estate a sprawling farm belonging to the Ottoman sultans.

Imagine a time when Balmumcu was a tranquil retreat. A haven of fruit orchards and shady groves. Sultan Mahmud II himself loved this place. He frequently visited the nearby Zincirlikuyu Palace often stopping by Balmumcu Farm. Legend says the farm’s name came from the candle making that took place there during his reign. The streets were lit by candlelight adding to its charm.

Under Sultan Abdülaziz the farm got a magnificent new addition a grand palace. But Balmumcu’s peace was shattered. The 1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War brought waves of refugees to Istanbul. Balmumcu became a refuge for those fleeing hardship. This influx transformed the area’s character forever.

In the early 20th century Balmumcu Farm was opened as a public park. People flocked here. Trays upon trays of farm-fresh fruit were freely offered to all visitors a testament to the Sultan’s generosity. This era of open generosity ended sadly. With the death of Sultan Reşad in 1918 the farm and palace passed to Seniye Sultan. The palace burned down in 1975.

Later the land became a military base housing the 3rd Gendarmerie Brigade and a gendarmerie school. After the 1960 military coup the palace briefly served as a detention center.

Balmumcu’s transformation accelerated in the 1960s when Barbaros Boulevard was constructed. Rapid development reshaped the area. Once a tranquil farm it became a densely populated neighborhood. Even Levazım Mahallesi was part of Balmumcu until the early 1990s. Today despite its modern features you can still find traces of the old orchards. The scent of plums in the air a whisper of Balmumcu’s rich history.

Today Balmumcu Mahallesi is a vibrant business district. Its population has fluctuated over the years. The area maintains a high density of commercial businesses. But step away from the bustle and you’ll still find hints of this remarkable history a rich tapestry woven through centuries of change. Take a moment breathe in the air.
