Kath. Kirche St. Thomas stands as a testament to faith. It also reflects architectural innovation. The church is located in Karlsruhe’s Grünwettersbach neighborhood. It is more than just a building. It’s a landmark.
Let’s step back to the mid-20th century. Grünwettersbach was primarily an evangelical community. But after World War II, many refugees arrived. A large number of them were Catholic. The existing church was not enough. A new place of worship was needed.
Rainer Disse, an architect from Karlsruhe, designed Kath. Kirche St. Thomas. Construction took place from 1956 to 1958. The church includes a nave. Also it has a detached bell tower. A sacristy connects these two structures.
Heinz Barth created the crucifix behind the altar. Emil Wachter contributed the Communion bank. He also made the pebble mosaic in front of the altar and the stained glass windows. These artistic elements enhance the church’s spiritual ambiance.
Kath. Kirche St. Thomas was consecrated on May 1, 1958. It is dedicated to the Apostle Thomas. In 1962, the bells were consecrated.
The origins of the original church go way back. It was first mentioned in 1278. Back then, it served as the main church for nearby villages. Those included Stupferich, Busenbach, and Hohenwettersbach.
Extensive renovations and remodeling occurred in 2011 and 2012. The elevated platform was removed. The altar was reduced in size. Christiane Grimm, an artist from Heidelberg, created a glass panel. It was installed behind the altar cross.
Kath. Kirche St. Thomas is part of a larger parish. This includes St. Peter and Paul in Durlach. Also, St. Johannes Baptista in Aue and Heilig-Kreuz in Grötzingen. St. Cyriakus in Stupferich and St. Margaretha in Wolfartsweier are also included. Together, they form the pastoral care unit of Karlsruhe-Durlach-Bergdörfer.
