The Church of the Nazarene – Oak Tree Fellowship was pioneered in 2004 by Reverend Alofagia “Alofa” Eli-Nofoa. He was a man with a big heart and a vision to connect with the marginalized. Alofa wasn’t content with traditional evangelistic approaches. He sought new ways to reach out to the “other,” taking risks and challenging the status quo. He saw his work as an extension of the ministry of Phineas F. Bresee, the founder of the Church of the Nazarene. Alofa embodied Bresee’s desire to “Christianize Christianity,” putting his faith into action by serving the homeless and street people of South Auckland. He even cooked and served them coffee, demonstrating his love and compassion in tangible ways. The Church of the Nazarene – Oak Tree Fellowship wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a beacon of hope for the community. Alofa’s leadership extended beyond the church walls. He taught theology classes for those interested in joining the Church of the Nazarene, sharing his knowledge and passion for his faith. His dedication to serving the disenfranchised left a lasting impact on the South Auckland community. His inquiring mind and desire to connect with those outside the church made him a beloved figure. Even after his passing in 2019, his spirit lives on in the work of the Church of the Nazarene – Oak Tree Fellowship.
