How about stepping into a stadium that echoes with the sounds of unity? You are standing before the Stadion des Friedens. It means Stadium of Peace in Leipzig. This stadium is more than just a sports venue. It’s a landmark with a rich history.

The Stadion des Friedens is one of Leipzig’s largest sports grounds. It sits in the Gohlis district on Max-Liebermann-Strasse. Today, it holds 20,500 fans. Five hundred of these seats are not covered. Back in 1951, after renovations, it could hold about 50,000 people.

Originally, this ground was opened in 1923 as “Wackerpark.” It served as the home for SC Wacker Leipzig. This club was quite famous back then. After World War II, the club was disbanded. Various clubs used the grounds. Some only used it for specific matches. Vorwärts Leipzig played some important games here for 20 years. From 1954 to 1963, SC Lokomotive Leipzig made it their permanent home.

In March 1979, BSG Rotation 1950 Leipzig had to move here. They came from their newly built ground, now the Egidius Braun Sportschule. In 1992, Rotation and SG Motor Gohlis-Nord swapped grounds. Since then, the blue and white team uses this area.

The Stadion des Friedens became famous for hosting heated football derbies. These were between 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and BSG Chemie Leipzig. It happened during the 1983/84 Oberliga season. The Central Stadium’s grass was in bad shape after a sports event. They needed a replacement. Thirty thousand and 19,000 fans came to Gohlis for these matches. A season earlier, TSG Chemie Markkleeberg hosted BSG Chemie Leipzig here. Twenty thousand fans attended because their stadium only held 6,000.

Besides three large fields, the Stadion des Friedens has other facilities. There is a small field, a beach area, and a hockey field. Also, there is a small and a large hard court. You will find an athletics hall, a weight room, and a Judo Dojo. A club room is also available.

Before nationwide leagues like Bundesliga, championships were played differently. The German Football Championship used a knockout system. It was similar to today’s DFB-Pokal. Games took place in neutral stadiums. Leipzig often used the Probstheidaer Stadion, the Fortuna Sportpark, and the Wackerpark.

Between 1906 and the construction of the large Wackerpark, games happened at the smaller “Wackerstadion Debrahof.” In 1932, FC Bayern Munich won a quarterfinal match here on their way to their first championship.

The German Athletics Championships took place here in August 1926. A new 100-meter world record was set. König from Breslau ran it in 10.3 seconds.

This stadium includes a club building with a sports room and restaurant. It offers standing room for 20,000 and 500 seats. There are sanitary facilities. The athletics hall covers 782 square meters. Floodlights are available. There are two circular tracks, including a synthetic track. You’ll also find a hockey field, a speed skating track, a small field, seven long jump facilities, a hard court, and a tennis court.

The Stadion des Friedens stands as a testament to Leipzig’s sporting heritage. It is ready for new stories. Take a moment to imagine the cheers and the triumphs within these grounds. It’s a place where peace and sport come together.
