Deep within the Palos Preserves lies a place shrouded in secrecy and historical significance: Red Gate Woods. A seemingly tranquil forest, Red Gate Woods holds the remnants of a groundbreaking scientific endeavor. This area, once code-named “Argonne,” played a crucial role in the Manhattan Project. Red Gate Woods became the unlikely home of the world’s first artificial nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1. Originally located at the University of Chicago’s Stagg Field, the reactor was dismantled and reconstructed within these very woods at “Site A.” During World War II, local residents often saw US Army MPs patrolling the area. However, the true nature of the operations remained a mystery for years. Following further experiments and the decommissioning of Chicago Pile-1 (later renamed Chicago Pile-2), the two-story reactor was buried in a massive hole known as “Plot M.” Red Gate Woods also served as the burial ground for other reactors and nuclear waste, creating a hidden legacy of scientific progress and potential environmental concern. By the 1970s, public anxiety grew regarding radioactivity levels at the site, which was frequently used for recreation. Surveys in the 1980s revealed strontium-90 in the soil at Plot M, traces of tritium in nearby wells, and plutonium, technetium, caesium, and uranium scattered throughout the area. This led to a $28.1 million cleanup effort in 1994, with 500 cubic yards of radioactive waste removed and sent to the Hanford Site. Today, Red Gate Woods stands as a testament to a pivotal moment in history. It is a place where the dawn of the nuclear age unfolded amidst the quiet beauty of a Cook County forest. The site now bears concrete markers indicating historical locations. The foundations of the Manhattan Project labs still remain, whispering stories of the clandestine activities that once took place here. Even the parking lot offers a glimpse into the past, with signage displaying Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi at Red Gate Woods during the Manhattan Project era. Red Gate Woods is more than just a forest preserve. It’s a time capsule, preserving a critical chapter in scientific history and the legacy of the Manhattan Project.
