A cascade of vibrant colour explodes before you. Welcome to Me Rongo Walk in Rainbows. This isn’t just any car park. It’s a breathtaking art installation transforming a utilitarian space into something magical.

Me Rongo Walk in Rainbows is the daytime counterpart to Lonnie Hutchinson’s Night I Love You. Both are part of the Night and Day project. This incredible collaboration between Reuben Paterson and Walter Foott uses 148 hand-cast prisms. They hang like a shimmering curtain. Rainbows dance across the concrete walls.

Imagine the transformation. A dull grey car park is suddenly alive with colour. The prisms don’t just look beautiful. They have a practical function too. Each floor of the seven-story car park has its own colour theme. This clever design acts as a subtle wayfinder for visitors.

This isn’t just about aesthetics. The rainbow itself holds deep symbolism. It’s long been a symbol of joy and good fortune. More recently it represents inclusivity and unconditional love. Me Rongo Walk in Rainbows amplifies this message. It adds another layer of meaning to the already vibrant artwork of Lonnie Hutchinson’s I Love You Aroha atu Aroha mai.

The collaboration between Paterson and Foott is a testament to creativity. Paterson envisioned activating the car park making it kinetic and beautiful. Foott’s expertise in prism-making was crucial to realising this vision. Together they created a stunning and functional piece of public art. It brightens the urban landscape.

As you stand here bathed in the glow of the rainbows remember this. Me Rongo Walk in Rainbows isn’t just an artwork. It’s an experience. It’s a reminder of the power of art to transform even the most ordinary spaces. It brings joy to everyone who sees it. It’s a vibrant testament to the spirit of Auckland.
